How effective is massage therapy for knee pain?
Knee pain affects approximately 25% of adults, limits function and mobility, and impairs quality of life, with osteoarthritis as the most common cause of knee pain in people 50 or older.
A systematic review and meta-analysis analyzed and evaluated available evidence on the effects of massage therapy compared to controls for knee osteoarthritis.
After 1 to 4 weeks of therapy, there was a significant reduction in pain and stiffness scores in the massage group. After 6 to 8 weeks of therapy, there was a significant reduction in stiffness and functionality scores. The researchers noted the results were short-term.
